TODAY is the 103rd National Day of the Republic of Panama.
The Filipinos can identify with the people of Panama who have been exposed to both Spanish and American cultures. Rodrigo de Bastidas founded Panama in 1501. Like the Philippines, Panama was colonized by Spain. In 1821, Panama was freed from Spain and joined Colombia. Panama declared its independence from Colombia on November 3, 1903.
The United States ratified a treaty on February 26, 1904, granting the use, occupation, and control of the Canal Zone to Panama. A new treaty followed in 1978 for a gradual takeover ...
