THE Catholic Church remembers today the life and works of St. Martin de Porres, "Martin of Charity, a loving father, father of the poor."

St. Martin was born in Lima, Peru on December 9, 1579, the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman, John de Porres, and a young freed woman of Panama, Anna Velasquez. He inherited the features and dark complexion of his mother which irked his father.
