The riddle solved: Cora Sandel's "En gate."
|
Coral Sandel explores the marginalized position of women in a small Scandinavian community in her short story 'En gate.' Sandel's plot fits Edwin Ardener's theory about dominant groups and muted groups. Mrs. Isaksen represents the dominant group and embodies its norms whereas the mysterious Mrs. Arnold, who belongs to the muted group, seeks ways to express herself. Her lonely excursions to the woods are adventures into the wild zone. Mrs. Arnold's character and the blank letter she sends herself at the end of the story can be explained if she is seen as a prophetess.
