While he never rowed in the mainstream, Gardiner C. Means (1896-1988) was an original and independent-minded researcher and writer who had considerable influence on economic thought and public opinion. Although he was often characterized as an empiricist lacking a theoretical orientation, Means regarded himself as a theorist. He was, in his own words, always seeking "to obtain the essential postulates for a new and realistic macro theory, a new paradigm to displace the orthodox" |Means 1975c, 151~.
