Much of the research on the origins of pastoralism in the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, has focused on the chronology of its introduction. Such chronological records are usually based on radiocarbon dates on material associated with sheep remains. However, this method may sometimes be misleading. Radiocarbon dating of actual sheep remains found in western South Africa indicates that some of the previous data in the archaeological record may have to be revised.
