Preliminary investigation of the plant macro-remains from Dolni Vestonice II, and its implications for the role of plant foods in Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Europe.

The diet of the hunter-gatherers of the European Pleistocene is a subject of intense debate because of the scarcity of reliable data during this period. Of particular interest is the importance of plant foods to pre-agrarian populations. Analysis of plant materials collected from the Dolni Vestonice II site in the Czech Republic using scanning electron microscopy shows that plant foods probably comprised a significant part of early man's diet. Further investigations of prehistoric sites using anatomical techniques and scanning electron microscopy are recommended.
