The economic success of some East and Southeast Asian countries which have authoritarian governments disproves the notion that economic growth is a function of the Protestant work ethic. Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew has denounced the mounting human rights campaign coming from what he perceives as a financially and spiritually bankrupt Western society.
