A scandium-aluminum alloy golf club that is said to be lighter and stronger than titanium clubs has reportedly been developed by Element 21 Golf, Irvine, Calif. Scandium metal (element 21 in the periodic table) is said to be 55% lighter and 25% stronger than titanium alloys, and the E21 driver contains the scandium-aluminum alloy in both the head and the shaft. Inherent metallurgical properties combined with a proprietary 25-step seamless production process results in a shaft that is nearly perfectly symmetrical, unlike graphite or stainless steel shafts.
