Abstract. This article presents a description of a five-step (5E) learning cycle lesson designed to engage students in the study of electromagnetic radiation in the form of radio waves. Students collect data on the strength and distance of radio waves heard during the day and after sunset. They then compile and analyze these sets of data and relate radio wave travel to concepts of electromagnetic radiation and interaction with the Earth's ionosphere.
