The International Organization of Consumers' Unions opened a regional office in Zimbabwe. The regional office will support and coordinate the work of all African consumer groups which have been brought together under a pan-African umbrella. The first director of the regional office is Joshua Gwitira, the Deputy Director of a rural and urban development agency. The week-long conference held after the opening discussed the development of a national consumer legislation and the effects of trade liberalization.
