Reverdy's 1917 journal Nord-Sud signals his call for an art that follows its own aims, despite the continuing war. Given the influence of cubism and this poet's involvement with cubist painters such as Juan Gris, one could easily classify his endeavours as a retreat from the overwhelming historical events. References to the war in a few of Reverdy's important poems of these years show that the poet did open a window, poetically, on these events.
