The passage of the Toleration Act in 1689 changed the nature of religion in England; no longer were Trinitarian dissenters outlawed and subject to criminal penalties. This served as the start of a more enlightened attitude to religion that dramatically changed the way in which religious affiliation was viewed. But early in the eighteenth century, the process was in its infancy and as the Convocation controversy of 1705 showed, there remained strong Anglican voices calling for the limitation, and even the abandonment, of toleration.
