Auburn city councilors will be able to appoint a new fire chief on a provisional basis only.

Councilors are expected to vote today to appoint Charles Michael Hammon, a Batavia fire captain, to the position. The appointment will hinge on whether Hammon can take and pass a civil service exam .

Interim Fire Chief Terry Winslow and Assistant Fire Chief Mark Farrell are the only two names on the local civil service list for fire chief. Winslow is retiring, and Farrell is not interested in the position, according to Interim City Manager ...
