Oct. 26--Charity Hope Valentine is one of those eternal waifs who may be luckless in love but is much beloved by audiences.

From the moment Charity walks into the joint -- Manhattan's tawdry Fandango, where she toils as a so-called "dance hostess," wink, wink -- this naif heroine in the musical "Sweet Charity" has tough luck tattooed all over her.

But you keep pulling for Charity to triumph over circumstances, because this street-schooled optimist can't stop pulling for herself.
