HIPPO are being massacred for their ivory and rangers threatened by the Mai Mai and other militia groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in a poaching free-for-all in the run-up to the presidential poll.

The Frankfurt Zoological Society, which ran a census on the hippo population this week, has called on the UN peace-keeping forces in the DRC to deploy troops to the Virunga National Park to protect the game rangers and to save the last of the hippo.
