Welding wizard Alan Thomas, pictured left, was disappointed with the outcome of his schooling having finished at 16 with few qualifications.

But a Modern Apprenticeship has proved to be his gateway to a better future - quite literally.

After nearly three years of factory jobs, Alan from Bridgend finally secured an Modern Apprenticeship via the Vale of Glamorgan Training Association (VGTA), which led on to a job with Cowbridgebased steel fabricators AP Engineering.
