30% of RP farmers now plant hybrid rice - survey.(Provincial News)

BUTUAN CITY -- At least 30 percent of the farmers nationwide have planted hybrid rice, and as a result, production of the cereal has gone up, it was reported.

A survey conducted in the irrigated areas of Isabela, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Iloilo, and Nueva Ecija showed that more farmers planted hybrid rice in the last five cropping seasons and that their rice production has noticeably increased.

For a long time, farmers had been using the inbred varieties. But in 1998, the planting of hybrid rice was introduced in the country.
