Jasper Johns: 'In Memory of My Feelings' - Frank O'Hara, 1961.

Jasper Johns' painting, 'In Memory of My Feelings,' takes it title from a poem by Frank O'Hara. Johns' abstract painting is antisentimental, silent and rather plain. On the other hand, there is a slight frivolity in the fork and spoon dangling off center. The numbers, lettering, allusions to Hart Crane and Alfred Lord Tennyson, the colors and style of the painting lend themselves to several interpretations.

I distrust narratives of origins--here is where my desire began--but I repeatedly feel compelled to concoct them.
