Higher education in Australia has evolved from a binary system into the Unified National System integrating former colleges of advanced education into universities. The Australian higher education system is funded and controlled by the federal government and, as such, must relate with the non-academic world. Australian universities carry vocational, research and civic responsibilities while implementing mission statements and maintaining their uniqueness and academic responsibilities. In all other respects, Australian universities are similar to universities in the US.
