Kate Chopin merges naturalism and realism into a holistic and modernist perspective in 'The Awakening.' She represents realism through the pianist Reisz, who, although a woman, has more developed masculine traits as shown by her critical ability. The doctor, Mandelet, embodies naturalism and is endowed with a sympathetic heart, which is more characteristic of women, although Mandelet is a man. These two characters serve as inspirations to the main character, Edna Pontellier, who, nonetheless, commits suicide because she is unable to cope with the life of a 'rebel' or modernist.
