It's hard to think of Halloween without conjuring up visions of vampire bats. Count Dracula and all of the creepy legends about blood-sucking monsters, however, originated in Europe well before the vampire bat was actually discovered in the Americas. Once the animal was found, it was cursed with this monstrous name and image. In reality, the vampire bat is a shy creature that is relatively harmless to humans.
