The bird launched itself from the veld on the left of the road. Its wings spread in full flight, the owl swooped and turned in front of my car. I stopped and switched off my car lights as I feared it was mesmerised by the brightness. It wasn't. The owl was hunting, checking the road for kill, scrutinising the veld for mice, rats, or maybe a plump dassie.
