Barnum riding solo at Baja 1000: The Phelan resident won ironman honor in 2004.

Oct. 15--Prior to racing the 2004 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 race as an ironman, Phelan's Rob Barnum knew it would be tough to train during the day with his motorcycle business and his five children.
Barnum decided to focus on the toughest part of the grueling race: The night-time portion.
Just about every night, Barnum would leave his home on his Honda XR 650 motorcycle and ride the nine miles to the El Mirage Dry Lake, then do a 40-mile loop twice until 2 a.m., then go home and go to bed.
