President Rafsanjani has dismissed speculation that he will seek a constitutional amendment to allow him to run for a third term. Speaking on the eve of a majlis vote to approve his nominee as Islamic guidance minister, the president also played down the political significance of his latest cabinet reshuffle.

Rafsanjani told a gathering of state officials on 19 February that "no amendment is envisaged regarding the presidential post", and that he will "serve the Islamic system in another trench" when his second term runs out in 1997. The constitution limits the ...
