IN 1885 THE PAINTER and architect Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823-1900) and his wife, Maria Cooley, bought a small Gothic revival cottage in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. The house, called Ever Rest, and the studio that Cropsey added afforded a splendid view of what the artist described as "one of the finest passages of scenery on the [Hudson] River."
