It is exactly a 100 years since two major resistances against colonial rule in this province took place: the Bhambatha Rebellion and Gandhi's Passive Resistance campaign.
Both movements played an integral role in forging the democracy we live in today.
The Bhambatha Rebellion, led by Inkosi Bhambatha, was a revolt in the first instance against the crippling taxes imposed by colonial authorities. The revolt spread across the province and created panic among the colonial authorities.
