In 1980, the visual arts courses at Germantown Academy were minor courses of study with low enrollment. The students at Germantown tended to not take the arts seriously and very little productive work seemed to be taking place in the studios.

In 1981 everything changed-Germantown Academy received a gift from the Robert Lavino family to build a center for the visual and performing arts. The center was designed primarily for upper- and middle-school students and included three art studios; a wood design studio; and photography, video and filmmaking studios. The filmmaking studio ...
