A EUR27MILLION road opening ended in chaos yesterday when former Health Minister Rory O'Hanlon had to be escorted by gardai through angry protesters.

And Junior Transport Minister Pat "The Cope" Gallagher only managed to officially open the new Monaghan by-pass after the crowd had dispersed.

He had had to remain holed up in the town's Four Seasons Hotel.
