During the French constitutional crisis of the Fronde (1648-52), over five thousand different pamphlets flooded Parisian marketplaces in response to the demands of a curious and active reading public. Most of these pamphlet; collectively known as the Mazarinades, were critical of the queen and expressed their discontent in songs, burlesque poems, and imaginary dialogues. In some of these pamphlets, ghosts, emissaries from God and other supernatural beings appeared before French subjects and the queen to comment on the political crisis facing France.
