THE Pope has got egg on his face. This is unfortunate for a man who named himself Benedict.

In-depth research involving Google reveals that Eggs Benedict (EB) originated in the United States and not the Vatican. This makes it all the more mysterious. Why should a pope name himself after his favourite breakfast, especially if it originated in a country more Protestant than Roman Catholic? Why should he choose the surname XVI, which is very difficult to pronounce, even in German?

At least this sinister link with the imperial US involves a recipe ...
