Historically, CAD/CAM programmers often rushed to develop part programs with little worry about how big the final NC part program would be or what communication issues might arise. Yet older CNCs with 9600-baud serial ports weren't designed to take such large chunks of information. Limited and expensive control memory spawned the need for direct numerical control (DNC) that drip-fed NC programs to the control.
