Former Massachusetts Gov. Edward J. King, a Democrat who forged a reputation as a fiscal conservative in the 1970s and joined the GOP in the mid-'80s out of frustration with his party, died yesterday at Lahey Clinic in Burlington. He was 81.

Gov. King underwent a series of brain surgeries this year and was hospitalized again after a fall earlier this month at his Middleton home. He died about 10:30 a.m. with his family at his side.
