F. Scott Fitzgerald's allusions in The Great Gatsby are mostly to books--the racist texts of Lothrop Stoddard and Madison Grant, possibly to Oswald Spengler's The Decline of the West (Fitzgerald 17)--and to popular music. "The Sheik of Araby" (83) for example, was not chosen at random. It refers to the movie of the same name and echoes its suggestion of class--almost racial--distinction between the blonde daughter of a British nobleman and the dark-haired, dark-skinned sheik.
