Cancer claims former Texas Gov. Ann Richards.

Sep. 14--AUSTIN -- Ann Richards, who shed the role of homemaker to rise through Texas politics and become the state's 45th governor and a national celebrity, died Wednesday after a six-month battle with cancer. She was 73.
Richards was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in March. She died about 8 p.m. at her home in Austin with her four children at her side, according to an e-mail sent out by her longtime friend and adviser Jack Martin.
