Neanderthals 'clung on for 7,000 years' in Gibraltar caves.

THE last refuge of Neanderthal man may have been uncovered in a cave in Gibraltar.

Scientists believe they have found evidence of a final outpost which suggests neanderthals managed to survive for several thousand years more than previously thought.

Stone tools unearthed in Gorham's Cave on the eastern face of the Rock are thought to have belonged to a group of around 15 neanderthals dating back 28,000 years ago.

Scientists had always thought the neanderthals died out much earlier than this, about 35,000 years ago.
