Born John Rowlands in 1841, Henry Morton Stanley spent his childhood in a workhouse in Wales. Disenchanted with his lot in life, he left Denbigh in 1857 and made his way to Liverpool where, working as a cabin boy, he earned his passage to New Orleans.

Having entered into the patronage of a wealthy merchant by the name of Henry Hope Stanley--whose name he later took as a mark of respect--he managed to find work with the New York Herald as a foreign correspondent.
