The low mass of small diesel engines reduces a driving system's natural frequency, thus bringing the driving system's vibration frequency closer to that of the driven system. When this happens, the system resonates and amplifies the vibrations to a level which can damage crankshafts, spline shafts, bearings, couplings, gears and seals in driven systems. To solve this problem, a complete torsional vibration review of the system is needed to select the right coupling that will tune the system's natural frequency out of resonance with torsional vibrations.
