The four misstatements of fact that I believe are most often perpetuated in some mineralogical texts and related publications are as follows:
1. The color of amethyst is due to manganese.
2. Parting occurs along twinning planes.
3. The red wispy inclusions in quartz are lepidocrocite.
4. Quartz has no cleavage.
Of the three, the last is perhaps the most grievous, although all are equally incomprehensible. I say most grievous because most of the major mineralogical texts have stated otherwise for many decades, and at least one for ...
