Carl Nielsen is much neglected on the concert circuit today. His richly textured, complex symphonies are part of the repertories of only a few major orchestras. One finds devotees of Nielsen among the fans of Jean Sibelius and Gustav Mahler, yet, his harmonic language moves beyond these two composers into a more "extended tonality." He was an original in his own land, and yet he also remained, through no fault of his own, outside the Central-European tradition.
