The collecting activities of a group of American missionaries in southern Sierra Leone in the second half of the nineteenth century have an importance that has not been widely recognized. They were members of an evangelical protestant church, the United Brethren in Christ (UBC), based in rural communities in the East and Midwest of the United States.
