For decades the mallard has been the No. 1 bird in the bag for Minnesota waterfowl hunters.

Canada geese were an afterthought.

Just look at the numbers: Forty years ago, hunters shot just 20,000 honkers - a fraction of the 285,000 mallards bagged that year.

Twenty years ago, 67,000 Canada geese fell, compared to 230,000 mallards.

But, oh, how the times have changed.

Since then, the state goose harvest has more than tripled, reflecting the explosion in the resident giant Canada goose population.
