JOHN ALLERS is the president of School Service Employees Local 284 in Minnesota. Recently, he applied to the Richfield school district to return for one day as a janitor, a job he had held for nine years before taking a leave of absence in 1970 to work for the union. Allers explained his request to work as a janitor for one day by saying he wanted to "return to his roots" before retirement. Be that as it may, by returning to work for one day, Allers, who was 59 years old at the time, would increase his pension from Minnesota's Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) ...
