Minnesotans have been slow to embrace mourning dove hunting since it was legalized here in 2004 after a 58-year absence.

An estimated 16,000 shotgun-toting hunters pursued the gray gamebird that initial season, but just 11,000 went afield last year - a small fraction of the state's 280,000 small-game hunters.

One reason could be that hunters - most of whom are new to dove hunting - simply don't know where or how to find them. But when the 2006 seasons opens 12 days from now, hunters will have a new option: public dove hunting areas.
