Mixing modernity with tradition comes naturally to Europe's universities. All over the continent--in Cambridge, Heidelberg, Paris, St. Petersburg, Uppsala, and many other cities--medieval buildings coexist with modern laboratories. So it is not surprising that Bologna University, the Alma Mater Studiorum founded in 1088, has given its name to a process that, beginning in 1999, has begun transforming European higher education.
