Vicksburg: The Campaign That Opened the Mississippi, by Michael B. Ballard. Civil War America Series. Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina Press, 2004. xv, 490 pp. $39.95 US (cloth).

Dr. Ballard's work is among the latest to be written on the Vicksburg campaign, and earns a place among the best. The benchmark work for the interpretation of that campaign, and the first to reveal the complexity of Grant's military masterpiece, is Edwin C.
