THE great controversy about changing South African names goes on, and it is sometimes educational. For instance, only a few days ago I learned from a newspaper that Tshwane, the new name for the Pretoria city centre, had its origin either in the African name for the Apies River, which runs through the city, or from a Setswana word meaning "black cow".

I'm sure that has some significance in Blue Bull country, but it doesn't sound like the sort of debate that you or I could contribute anything to. So perhaps we should chill out with some reflections on another name ...
