The invention of photography and the origins of the Royal Geographical Society are rooted in the same decade, and over the past 170 years, the two have developed side by side. As explorers travelled far and wide to further our understanding of the world around us, they increasingly turned to photography to create a permanent visual record of their discoveries. Upon their return, many of them deposited their images in the Society's archives, which eventually grew into an unparalleled historical resource.
