Spontaneous cerebral emboli are significantly more common in people with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, and may represent both a common pathophysiology and a potentially treatable cause of dementia.

Ultrasound monitoring for just 1 hour detected emboli in up to 40% of dementia patients, raising the possibly that monitoring for longer durations could identify emboli in many more, said Dr. Nitin Purandare of the University of Manchester, England, and colleagues (BMJ 2006;332:1119-24 [Epub doi:10.1136/bmj.38814.696493]).
