American artists have long been in love with the Louvre. While the United States was still a colony, painters such as Benjamin West were setting up their easels in the museum to learn techniques by copying the Old Masters in its splendid collection. "What is not worthy of the Louvre is not art" was the oft-expressed opinion of James McNeill Whistler.
