Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala's recent attack on breast cancer and other diseases of women highlighted a unique approach to cancer therapy that until now has received too little attention.

In September 1990, Paula O'Hara of Boston noticed a lump in her breast shortly before she became pregnant. The day after her child's birth, her doctors confirmed that it was cancerous, and two weeks later, she had a mastectomy. What concerned Paula more than the loss of a breast, however, was the loss of her hair during chemotherapy.
